Question
Imagine you go to a bar on Friday night. You're down on your luck. After a few alcoholic beverages, you discuss with the person sitting next to you the BRILLIANT plan to rob a bank in a stolen car. You put your plan in action the next day, and succeed. A few days later, you are at the beach, enjoying your ill-gotten gains with your partner in crime. You are both caught red-handed with the car, but you & your partner have managed to hide the money.
The police haul you both off to jail, and put you in separate interrogation rooms, and offer you each the same deal: confess (& get less prison time), or don't confess (more time in prison). Discuss how you would behave in this situation when your partner is (A) a long-time friend, vs. (B) someone you just met at the bar and have no relationship with other than the crime.
Would you act the same in each scenario at the police station if you were offered a deal (less prison time) if you were to confess, or would you act differently in either case?

Explanation / Answer
If the accomplice is a old friend and you know that he is not a regular crimal , there is a large chance that he will confess to the crime and therefore you should also confess so that both can get away with lesser punishment. If the accomplice is almost a stranger due to recent friendship , and you know his criminal background , you can assume that he will be a hard nut and will not confess to the crime. In such a scenerio you should also not confess to the crime.Since both don't confess , the police may belive that that the crime has not been commited by both of you.
