Introduction Oceanography

Choose one of the water properties presented in the learning module and discuss why you think it is important to the ocean and/or marine lives. At least 6 complete sentences are required.

Property of Water Table 6.2 Properties of Water Property Physical state Remarks Importance to the Ocean Environment Only substance occurring naturally in all three phases as solid, liquid, and gas (vapor) on Earth's surface Transfer of heat between ocean and atmosphere by phase change Dissolving ability Dissolves more substances in greater qua ntities than any other cornmon liquid Importa nt in chernical, physical, and biological processes Density determined by (1) temperature, (2) salinity, and (3) pressure, in that order of importance. The temperature of maximum density for pure wa ter is 4°C. For seawater, the freezing point decreases with increasing salinity Controls oceanic vertical circulation, aids in heat distribution, and allows seasonal stra tification nsity: mass per unit volume ture of maximurn density for pure wa ter is Surface tension Highest of all common liquids Highest ofall common liquids Highest of all common solids and liquids Controls drop formation in rain and clouds; important in cell physiology Importa nt on the small scale, especially Conduction of heat on cellular level Heat capacity: quantity of heat required toraise temperature of 1 g of a substance 1°C Latent heat of fusion or lost per unit mass by a substance changing from a solid to a liquid or a liquid to a solid phase without an accompanying rise in tempera ture Prevents extreme range in Earth's temperatures; great heat moderator Thermostatic heat-regulating effect due to the release of heat on freezing and absorption on melting : quantity of heat gained Highest of all common liquids and most solids (80 cal/g) tent heat of vaporization Highest of all common substances (540 cal/g) Immense importance: a major factor in the transfer of heat in and between ocean a nd La : quantity of heat gained or lost per unit mass by a substance changing from a liquid to a gas or a gas to a liquid phase without an increase in ternperature atmosphere, driving weather and climate

Explanation / Answer

OCEANOGRAPHY is the study of the water of the oceans and the earth beneath it and also the life in ocean. Oceans cover 70 percentage 9f earth's surface and almost 95 percentage of earth's entire water. Oceanographers and marine scientists measures these properties of water and the important property is

WATER DENSITY: Density is defined as the amount of matter in given volume. In other words if we consider marine lives, because if the water is denser then only less light will be reaching the deep layers where different marine lives are adapted to particular specialization. If the water had no density then it would travel at the speed of light because it becomes massless.

Density of water changes with temperature since the water density factor allows ice to float and any liquid is more denser compared to solid. Commonunits of density are g/cm3 anx the density of the water is 1g/mL. The water density has important consequences in cooling the water bodies beneath.

Sun is a form of energy on earth and we all humans rely on sunlight where as aquatic animals deep in the oceans can do survive even where there is no light. During nights the surface water body becomes denser. Density of seawater increase as the temperature decreases and also the pressure near the bottom.
