Question

It seems like in today’s day and age, we do not think about who owns what businesses. When looking at CEO’s we tend to notice more whites than African Americans being CEO’s. Well, some of the largest businesses such as “Intelligent Decisions located in Ashburn, VA, Porter-Walker LLC located in Columbia, Tennessee, RYCARS Construction LLC located in Kenner Louisiana, Advantage Communications located in Little Rock, Arkansas, Prestige Automotive Group located in Michigan, March/Hodge Automotive Group located in Tampa, Florida, Georgia, New York, Maryland, and Massachusetts, GlobalHue, IMAGES USA located in New York City and Detroit, Carver Federal Savings Bank located in New York City, and OneUnited Bank located in Boston, Los Angeles, and Miami”(Kirkwood) are some of the largest African American-owned businesses. There African American businesses range throughout the United States, there is no given area where they are the most. New York is listed twice but these businesses are all scattered thought out the states. It is being recognized that more African American owned businesses are appearing and more CEO’s of different races including African Americans are achieving a hire status in the workplace. The ethnic and racial compositions in the neighborhood I have lived in and the school I have attended have been majority of whites. When I graduated high school, there were no African Americans and maybe less than five students that were Brazilian or of Hispanic descent. I believe that there was not much composition between the whites and the other ethnic groups. I do believe through my own experience being one of those five students who were not white, you can become very influenced by the people you surround yourself with. My high school was not that small and who you hung out with mattered so if you did not act white, racial comments would come at you left and right. The whites definitely played a huge part in influencing the other ethnic groups to become/act more like them. Steps necessary to ensure more diversity would be for kids in my area to become more exposed to other ethnic groups. I know in school they have different language classes you can take or ethnic cooking classes but, that is not enough for kids. Something as little as exchange students and offering some type of studying abroad would have been helpful in learning more about diversity. Something needs to change in schools that do not have a lot of diversity so students can become more exposed to different cultures before college.

IN 5-7 LINES, WHAT DO YOU AGREED WITH THIS PASSAGE AND EXPLAIN WHY.

Explanation / Answer

I completely agreed with this passage. The United States has a racially and ethnically diverse population. Two major categories are White American and Black or African American. Almost 70 percentage of the population is dominated by White Americans. Many people think that in this modern society Racism is no longer a problem in America. But sadly Racism and Discrimination are facts of life for many Black Americans. Starting from the school to work place there is Racism problem everywhere where the black Americans are targeted, President Obama himself has faced racist treatment. Many researchs found that black school and college students face higher levels big stress related to racial discrimination. This black-white discrimination starts from preschool and goes to all the way to college. In my personal opinion all Americans are not racist and there are good, caring teachers who teach all people and all religions in a equitable manner. Hope this racism concept will end soon.
