Question

Recent studies have documented the presence of a wide range of hormones and antibiotics in U.S. streams-these compounds originate from the medicines we take. Because streams serve as the water supply for many municipalities, large numbers of people are likely being exposed to these compounds. Although the concentrations are low, data are lacking as to the long-term effect on human health. a) If the source of your city's drinking water is a stream, what would you do until more scientific data becomes available? Note that bottled water may not be a solution as it is often times just city water. b) How could you personally, as a citizen, help reduce the amount of pharmaceuticals that are entering our water supplies?

Explanation / Answer

Water is essential for living. I would use boiled water. It might not be very helpful in removing the pharmaceutical products but it could be helpful in reducing its concentration. I think distilling the water might also the option as it would remove most of the drugs. So till the report comes i would use distilled water.

b. Personally i would avoid the intake of unwanted drugs. If I have some unused prescription medicines, I will ask my pharmacy if they will take them back for disposal. If not, I will find out drug take-back programs in my community. I would take only the prescribed or recommended amount of needed drugs. I will follow federal guidelines for disposal of unneeded and expired drugs. I would also request other people to stop taking unwanted drugs and would make them aware about the hazards effects it can have on us.
