Question

Sustainable fishing is an important concept. It focuses on the importance of not over-fishing. If fisherman over-fish and don’t allow the species to repopulate the species are vulnerable to elimination in that environment. There are many real-life examples of this all over the world. Please review this source on over-fishing (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. for more detail. Now let’s look at this on a smaller scale. Your local town has two small lakes used for fishing and recreation. Twice a year there is a fishing competition at both lakes (they contain the same kinds of fish). The event continues to grow in the number of fisherman participating. For a few years, the event is very successful, all the fishermen are catching large numbers of fish and the event is drawing lots of people into the town, which is great for the local economy. However, several years into the competition, the number of fish being caught is decreasing. It seems that the overall number of fish in both lakes has greatly decreased. This isn’t good for the fishermen, or for the town. Is this a case of overfishing? Help figure out what is causing the decrease in fish number by using the scientific method. (Hint: you will have to design your own test). Observation: Question: Hypothesis: Prediction: Test: Result: Imagine the result you got was not what you thought it would be. What would you do next?
