Question
“From the Industrial Revolution to a Sustainable Future”
Select a building product or invention developed during the Industrial Revolution. We are defining the Industrial Revolution as the advances in technology associated with:
the use of coal, oil and electricity in the fabrication and operation of buildings
the use of steel as a building material
the modern use of concrete as a building material
the use of other modern industrialized materials
Your paper is to describe four topics related to this product.
What technologies served the same function before the industrial revolution?
How did the technology operate?
What resources were needed to create and/or operate it?
What were its limitations?
How did the Industrial Revolution technology change the way that buildings/cities were constructed or operated?
How did this development change what buildings were capable of doing?
How did this development change the construction process?
What were the energy requirements to support this development?
What new forms of businesses and jobs came about because of this development?
What are the benefits and challenges of using this technology today?
What are the benefits to individuals and society for using this technology?
What are the current energy costs of using this technology?
What are the environmental costs of using this technology?
What are the economic costs of using this technology?
How might a more sustainable technology replace this technology?
What are the comparative costs and benefits of the two technologies?
What are the challenges associated with changing from one technology to another?
What opportunities will the change provide?
The paper is to have a minimum of 800 words. Please include any graphics that will help describe your technology. Please also cite a minimum of four references. The paper is to be in a downloadable file, either a Word file or pdf.
Explanation / Answer
1. In this paper, use of concrete as modern building material is chosen. After the industrial revolution, many changes ave been undergone in the architectural technology. Before the revolution, traditional natural materials were used in the construction sector. There were concept of science, however, the use of machinery was less. Instead of concrete, wood, bone, stone, metal, bamboo clay, lime plaster etc were used.
2. The materials were used based on durability of the materials, height, degree of control and available energy to the construction process.
3. The tools used to made the constructual were taken from nature. Along with stone, bone, wood, and other materials, people used chopper, hand axe, celt, flake tool, leaver, carry, pierce, pound.
4. As previous construction process were based on conjecture and natural resources, those were vulnerable to the natural disaster. Therefore, the costruction was again to be made after any disaster in the absance of any matal resources.
