Question

Connor is a graduate of a presitigious university where he majored, and achieved high honors, in physics. For one reason or another, he couldn't get it together to apply for a job on graduation and has been essentially unemployed for two years, living with his parents. Now, he sees the job of his dreams advertised on the web site of an engineering company he admires(Company). He know he has the skills, knowledge, and desire and can do a freat job for Company. However, Company's website states that Company does not consider applicants who are unemployed. Connor believes that this practice is unethcial. So, Connor changes the graduation date on his resume to give the impression that he has just recently graduated from college and sends it off. He justifies his action by remembering a statement by Martin Luther King to the effect that one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. Plus, he figures if he's caught, forgiveness is easier to obtain that permission.

A. Do you think Company's practice of considering only job applicants who are currently employed is ethical?

B. Do you think Connor's response to it is ethical?

In your answer, be sure to discuss whether a. utilitarian b.Kantian c. virtue ethics theories would support their practice and response.

Explanation / Answer

1. No, the company's practice of considering only job applicants who are currently employed is not ethical. Many of the college graduates may not seek employment immediately after their graduation or some may give their time for entreprenuership related work. Some may be unemployed due to personal and family reasons. So it is not right considering only employed people only because the employed were already employed and if there are persons who ahve talent and skill as per requirements of the company, then should should hire him as it will decrease unemployment rate.

2. We can't be so sure about the ethical nature of Connor's. From his unemployment viewpoint he wants to do that job and has all essentials related to work. So it seems ethical form this angle as the requirement put up by the company is non ethical. So it rightly said by Martin Luther King that we have moral responsiblity to disobey the unjust law's. Morally what connor has done seems to be right but overall he is indulging in un-ethical practice which can coat him a job in near future. Right thing will be if he approaches some judicial officer.
