chapter 8 page 246 study question no.10

In a risk assessment of genetically modified corn, it is argued that: “Since we have not been able to show scientifically that there are adverse health effects, genetically modified corn does not pose a health risk.”

(a). Is this argument sound?

(b). Suppose that the precautionary principle is applied to the introduction of genetically modified corn as consumer food. What would that then imply?

Please help me this questions in detail.

Explanation / Answer

a) this argument is not sound due to the limitations and shortcomings in human understanding and science. These drawbacks do not enable the scientists to prove actual health risks associated with modified corn.

b) this implies that genetically modified corn does impose health risk though those risk may not big but some precautionary measures are needed.
