Nominal variables are those in which the categories have a nominated names and there is no inherent order between them. Since the group number assigned are just nominated names for the category so they are nominal variables.

Ordinal variable are those in which categories are classified according to the ranks. The dominance code is an example of ordinal variable since the dominance code is given numeric value which reflects the dominance ranking in the vegetation dataset.

Ratio variable: It is a type of interval scale with the zero indicates the absence of the quantity being measured. Here the foliage cover is a ratio variable since 0 in this case indicates the absence of the vegetation cover.

The interval variable: It is a numeric scale which not only species order as well as the division between the points on the scale have equal distance between them. The plot based crown cover is an example of interval variable because it has a specific interval of 10% between each class.

Discrete variables are those that can take only finite number of possible values. The dominant classification is an example of discrete variable since it can take only two variable dominant or co dominant.

Continuous variable- these are the variables in which can take on a infinite number of possible values. Since tree height can be any number possible so it is an example of continuous variable.
