Question
You are using a Suunto clinometer to determine tree height. Standing 25 metres directly across slope from the base of the tree and reading from the percent (%) side of the measurement scale, you read 72% to the tip -11% to the base. Examining the tree a second time you discover that it is leaning directly toward you. You plumb the position of the highest point of the canopy and discover it is 4.63m closer to you than the base of the tree. You also record the slope angle as -20°. What do you record as the vertical height?
Explanation / Answer
Distance across the slope from the base of the tree = 25m
Top measurement = 72%
Bottom measurement = -11%
Total height = (top measurement - bottom measurement) * 0.25 = 83 *0.25 =20.65 metres.
And in the second part, its -20 degree or only 20 degree? I had a confusion. Please make it bit for clear.
