The type of energy transfer taking place when a pump is compressed is, the work done in compressing the pump as mechanical energy is converted to internal heat energy. This heat energy is pushing the outlet valve and the air is left to inflate the tyre. While pumping in the energy goes inside the system and while pulling out the energy goes out of the system. This is a closed system as the heat is released into a conditioned space and not in a surrounding space as like in open system.
