Unit VI Scholarly Activity Address both of the following writing prompts.

Your responses to both of your chosen prompts should be at least 500 words each.

No title page is needed, but be sure to indicate which writing prompts you are addressing at the top of each response. Each response needs its own reference page. Writing Prompts (respond to both):

1. Review the Reading Assignment titled as "The Greening of a Pulp and Paper Mill" by Hill, Saviello, and Groves. In your review, describe: the history of the Androscoggin Mill, including when it was built, the strike, number of employees, and amount of paper produced, the kraft pulping process, pollution problems prior to 1990, P2 methods implemented after 1990, best available technologies, and economics, and key actions by the 1990s management team that changed the mill from an environmental problem to an environmental success.

2. Review the Reading Assignment titled as "Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Opportunities for Concrete Pavements" by Santero, Loojos, and Ochsendorf. In your review, describe: greenhouse gas production from construction and operation of pavements, how each of the following reduces greenhouse emissions: embodied emissions, albedo, carbonation, and vehicle fuel consumption, the five greenhouse gas emissions strategies starting on page 861, best available technologies related to concrete paving, and the Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) presented in the article. You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for both of your responses. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations.

Explanation / Answer

Review and Summarization of the given contents are as follows-

1) International Paper (IP), the world’s largest forest products company, owns the Androscoggin Mill, a large pulp and paper mill in Jay , Maine, in the nor theastern United States. In the late 1980s, an 18- month strike had embittered workers and townspeople and left the mill’s reputation in tatters. In response to mill environ- mental violations, some of which were considered crimes by state regulators, the town of Jay passed its own environmental ordinance to control mill emissions. Early in the 1990s, new management, including two former corporate-level employees, sought to change the mill’s business approach and turn the Androscoggin Mill into IP’s best environmental performer .The initial emphasison establishing and maintaining compliance was expanded to include aggressive pollution prevention effor ts that led to cooperative projects with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and stakeholder groups..it was the way through which the mill owner take it as the self profit and it should be there that they think and take it as ecofriendly. later on the mill’s approach in the 1990s evolved fur ther to essentially follow principles of industrial ecology . New approaches focused on “ closing the loop” by ending beneficial uses for previously landlledwastes, replacementsfor most hazardous chemicals, and reductions in solid and hazardous waste generation. The mill also pursued the establishment of symbiotic relationships with a facility that began using a mill by-product on-site and an onsite natural gas burning facility that provided par t of the mill’s steam demand. IP also established a public advisory committee in 1992 to advise management on operational and “ big- picture” issues, which later included the application of sustainability criteria to the mill. IP has since formed community advisory committees at each of their integrated pulp and paper mills. so in the reading assignment it is focused that what aare the matters upon which the mill owner should look upon and control the pollution rate to environment due to their mills.

2) Today we all know that our world is so advanced interms of science and the technology. if we utilize this in a correct path than we will get many advantages of this but if it is in wrong direction and the sustanaibilty of this reduced to zero in the human society than it will be so harsh that it will destroy the whole human community along with the other organism and materials present on this planet earth.

Now if we discuss about the greenhouse effect than basically it is termed as the heating effect generate in the inner layers of the earth surface due to the radiation comes from the earth. the green house effect has it own sustainaility on the earth atmoshere and environment. it is because to the fact that it maintain the temprature parameters on this planet. but suppose if this increases to a certain level which is not beneficial for us than it will lead to a harsh environmental situation. this will cause the uneven season changes and increases the average temperature ranges on this planet earth. and this will lead to many others factors to destroy the planet.

Greenhouse effect are generally produced due to both natural as well as human activities. but in current times, the humans are more responsible for the generation and increament of such undesired situation of greenhouse effect. nowadays everyone have the vehicles which heating the environemnt contineously and raising the temperature. the industrializatuion also effect the same.

So in the above given reading assignment it is focused on that how we will eliminate the problems regarding this and what are the main sources which producing this. they greatly focused on the fixation of such problems and a spreading of general awareness.

hope this will help you as here we try to give you more explainatery rather review so that it will clear the topic with the incusion of review.

thankyou
