The natural toxins in the US great lakes water systems include Mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) mainly, however, pharmaceuticals and flame retardants are now being added as chemicals.
The habitat & wildlife protection & restoration may be modified by this toxin issue.The habitat restoration in great lakes improves fish and wildlife habitat and population by two methods- an annual competition and through established multi-year regional habitat partnerships.
Besides this, these toxins affect the health of both humans and animals. E.g.PCBs cause cancer. It can also inhibits the reproduction of animals. Mercury is also vital for the entire ecosystem of the Great lakes.
