Question
In the image below, what positions on the Earth would be experiencing high tide?
Position A & B
Postions B & C
Positions A & C
Postions A & D.
In an ocean basin the tidal bulge is pushed by the Coriolis effect to the western part of the basin. Where will the basin be experiencing low tide?
The eastern side
The western side
The southern side
The northern side
What would happen to Earth's tides if we didn't have a moon?
we would have tides just lower fluctuations
we would have tides just higher fluctuations
we would no longer have tides
there would be no change since the sun would be there
Which of the following would exert the strongest gravitational force?
An object twice the size of the Earth at any distance.
Any object at the same distance as the Moon.
An object twice the size of the Earth at the same distance as the Moon.
An object twice the size of the Earth but twice the distance as the Moon.
A.Position A & B
B.Postions B & C
C.Positions A & C
D.Postions A & D.
Explanation / Answer
1. Image not given
2. Option A , Eastern Side
As earth rotates from west to east, the tidal bulge shifts towards the western boundary of the ocean basin and the water surface slops gently downward toward the east. So the western boundary of the ocean basin experiences high tide and eastern boundary experiences low tide.
3. Option A, we would have tide, but lower fluctuations
A moonless earth will also change the size fo tides on earth because sun still has an effect called as solar tides, making them about one-third as high as they are now.
4. Option C, An object twice the size of the earth at the same distance as the moon
The Gravitation force is proportional to product of their masses and inversely proportional to teh square of teh distance between them.
So for an increase in gravity, size or mass of the object has to increase and/or ditance between the two masses have to decrease.
