Question

You are employed in a medical office. Medicare payments to physicians who work in the clinic have been cut, so policy has changed to “no new Medicare patients will be accepted”. 1.Do you believe this policy is ethical? Why or why not? 2.You are accompanying an older relative visiting the clinic for the first time and your relative has been turned away as a patient. What is your reaction to the clinic’s stated policy? 3.Imagine that you are the older person visiting the clinic for the first time and you are turned away as a patient. Will your reaction be the same as in question 2? Explain your answer

Explanation / Answer

1. The policy of "No new Medicare patients will be accepted" as the medicare payments to physicians who work in the clinic have been cut is not at all ethical. First of all medicare payment is paid by the government to the beneficiaries. If the physicians' medicare payments have been cut then due to just that particular reason all the medicare patients are not accepted is not acceptable. There will be many low income people, elderly people, pregnant people, children etc who are the beneficiaries of the medicare facility and they will need it anytime so ignoring them just because of the physicians is not a good gesture. Being in hospitality industry and medical care unit there should be compassion and trust then only peple will b benefitted.

2. Medicare payment is for the elderly people by the government. If they have applied to avail this facility and have paid the relevant amount for it then surely they should get the benefit of the same. They are eligible for it. If i visit the clinic with an elderly relative of mine who is eligible for the benefit and if he is turned away due to the unethical policy then my reaction wont be in favour of the clinic from humanitarian point of view. I would surely persuade the clinic authority to change the policy and take care of the elderly people as government has made this facility and they have promised to help them when required. I would even go and highlight this issue to the government authority.

3. If I am the older person visiting the clinic for the first time and if I am turned down as a patient then also my reaction will be the same as in question 2. Definitely i will be angry and speak against such a policy. But the condition that if I am in better health then surely i will go to another clinic where I can avail this facility easily without any hassels. Also, I will see to it that the complaint against such a policy and the clinic is raised and the government takes necessary action against the authorities.
