Electromagnetic radiation is a broad term used to describe describe different types of energies released into the space by stars. It is the energy that is present all around us. Electromagnetic radiations includes Radio waves, micro waves, infrared, visible light, ultra violet, x ray and Gamma ray in the order of increasing frequency ( decreasing wavelength).
Electromagnetic radiations are used for communication and transmission of information. Not all electromagnetic radiations are used for procees of communication. The important types used in communication purposes are visible light, infrared, micro waves and radio waves that inlcudes TV, FM (Frequency modulation) and AM (Amplitude modulation) radio waves. These waves owing to their peculiar properties makes it suitable for specific communication systems.
For eg: Visible light or infrared is used in Optical fibres. Optical fibres carry information between two places using entirely light based technology. This technology is used in telephones, computers etc
We use codes to send signals using electromagnetic radiation. There are mainly two types of signal, analog and digital. An analogue signal changes its frequency and amplitude all the time, A digital signal have only two values, 0 and 1. The signal whether its a voice, music or data, is converted inot a cod eusing 0 and 1 converting the signals to a stream of 0 and 1 values. These pulses are added to the electromagnetic radiation and transmitted. the signal when received at the other end is decoded to get the original signal. Digital signals have better quality reception because noise can be easily removed in digital.
Wired communication refers to the transmission of data over a wire based communication technology. For eg. Telephone networks, Cable television or internet acces and fiber optic communication. Anything and everything you see around yourself with wires attached for transmission and uses electricity to work belongs to wired communication. Wireless technology refers to the communication of information over a distance without requiring wires, cables or electrical conductors. Infromations are transimtted through air by using electromagnetic waves like radio, infrared and satellite.
There are so many examples of communcation systems we use in our day to day life including mobile phones, telephones, television, radio etc.
