Help me with these ecology questions please

1. Which of the following is an example of intrasexual selection?

   a.   Female fruit flies choose mates based on the quality of their courtship song

   b.   Forelimb length in male forked fungus beetles is an attractive trait, and males with longer forelimbs are chosen as mates more frequently by females

   c.   Male turkeys cooperate with their kin to perform courtship displays

   d.   Sweet-smelling female flowers are more likely to receive pollen than scent-less female flowers

   e.   The brightness of male plumage in many bird species is an indicator of the male’s vigor

5. Which of these statements is true of genetic drift?

   a.   Genetic drift affects all genotypes equally

   b.   Genetic drift only causes loss of maladaptive alleles

   c.   Genetic drift is a random association between phenotype and fitness

   d.   Genetic drift only occurs in small populations

   e.   Genetic drift always acts rapidly

6. In some years, a population of black-capped chickadees experience very cold winters, such that only those Chickadees that have a larger body mass are able to make it to the breeding season. In years with warmer winters, however, chickadees that have a larger body mass are more susceptible to predation. If body mass is a heritable trait, what can you predict about the average body mass of the population over time?

   a.   The average body mass will always increase

   b.   The average body mass will always decrease

   c.   The average body mass will both increase and decrease

   d.   The average body mass will not change

Explanation / Answer

1. Answer is Option C, Male turkeys cooperate with their kin to perform courtship displays.

Male turkeys benefit even when they dont find their mate in female. This is a textbook example of cooperative courtship.

5. Answer is Option D, Genetic drift only occurs in small populations.

Genetic drift can be defined as variation in the relative frequency of different genotypes in a small population owing to the chance of disappearance of particular genes. It ofcourse affects also big populations, but is very negligible.

6. Answer is Option D, Average body mass will not change over time

There wont be no year effect on average body mass in black capped chickadees. Hower body mass changed over time within winter increasing and will remain constant for some time upto summer.
