Question
The effect of attendance on performance in economics principles examination has traditionally been investigated by using attendance as explanatory variable in addition to traditional explanatory variables such as SAT, GPA, gender and age. One problem with this is that one never knows if the negative relationship traditionally uncovered is because poor students are more likely to miss the class or if missing class causes a lower examination score. A journal submission has addressed this problem via probit analysis using data from 95Students on a 30 question multiple choice examination. The dependent variable is whether or not question was answered correctly. The explanatory variables were set of 94 dummies for the students, a set of 29 dummies for the questions, and a dummy whether student was absent whenever the course content relating to that question was presented in the class, A referee says this is crazy because it dosen’t control for whether a student is smarter (SAT score), works harder (GPA), is male, is older, etc. and that there are far too many degrees of freedom lost by all those dummies. The journal editor does not understand fancy econometrics and so comes to you for advice. What advice would you provide?
Explanation / Answer
The relationship between student's performance in the examination and the tendency of the students to miss classes can easily be explained using this approach. For this purpose, a journal submission via probit analysis using data from 95 students on a30 question multiple choice examination was being taken. The age, and the gender of the student was also taken on the cover page itself. The questions being taken were categorised into student's smartness level and whether he is hardworking.
Thus the final result is evaluated . If a student has scored less markes in any particular question,he is being asked whether he attended the classroom session when that particular topic was taught in the class. Thus by taking all the parameters into consideration, the final performance of the student is evaluated. It takes gender, age, smartness of the students, whether he is hardworking and the low score can be attributed to classes missed by the student.
