Question

A research assistant was asked to measure the absolute permeability of a sandstone core sample via coreflooding using Nitrogen gas. (a) What are the parameters she needs to monitor/measure during the experiment? The next day, she compares her results with her colleague, who performed the same experiment using water. The permeability measurement obtained by coreflooding using Nitrogen was higher than the permeability obtained by coreflooding using water. (b) What could be the reason for the discrepancy? c) How can this discrepancy be reconciled?

Explanation / Answer

a) Upstream pressure and downstream pressure ,viscosity of nitrogen gas, cross section area of sample, core length of sample and the flow of gas with respect to time and pressure. b) The discrepancy is due to the fact that water reacts with the sample altering its permeability by filling the pores. Thus the permeability decreases. c) This discrepancy can be reconciled by drying out the sample so that the sample becomes fully saturated with air and the experiment can be carried out again.
