Question

Environmental & Resource Economics(12)

What is the economic intuition behind the following statement, in your answer use all the topics and definitions learned in class. Let’s say each household generates one kilo of garbage. And one kilo of garbage generates 500 grams of recyclable material. So, a thousand homes generate 500 kilos of material that could be recycled. That’s 500 kilos less of material that would pollute the rivers, the lagoons that won’t clog the sewers or be buried here in the landfill doing such great harm to nature and the environment. What people can recycle and what they can compost is of great importance. But people say that it is just one can, what difference does it make? One can is of great importance because 99 is not a 100 and that single can will make the difference.

Explanation / Answer

Environmental Pollution : Environment is getting polluted by the non-biodegradable wastes generated by the people. It is very harmful for the environment as it pollutes the water and land.It also clogs the sewers and causes harm to the environment.

Reduce Reuse and Recycle: During the past years, the wastes have grown enormously in the environment. In order to bring it to the normal level, the environmnetalist has started a campaign 'Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.' The production of the waste materials should be reduced, materials should be reused like clothes, paper and recyclable materials should be recycled. It will reduce the harm to the environment.

Economic barrier that limit the perceived recyclability : The economic barrier that limits the perceived recyclability is that the cost incurred in recycling the entire waste material should not exceed the final output obtainedafter recycling, otherwise it is of no use.

An individual efforts can make a difference : Each individual can make a difference by contributing towards reducing the waste material produced and thus reducing the pollution level in the environment.

Everything is recyclable, only thing is it is to be done in the most economical way. There should be proper infrastructure to carry out the recycling process. People should be made aware about recycling and the harmful effects caused to the environment due to pollution.
