Problem 3.5 from 3rd edition of Structural analysis and synthesis

On a piece of graph paper construct a stratigraphic column for the Cenozoic and Mesozoic units of the Bree Creek Quadrangle. Choose a scale that allows your column to fit comfotably on a single sheet of paper.

I understand what a stratigraphic column is but have never really constructed one from a geologic map. Was just wanting some help to get the column started ie: how to scale it so it will fit, how to know the thickness of each layer, the types of boundaries between the rock units, the key features to include in a stratigraphic column, and most importantly just how to derive all of these from the bree creeck quadrangle

Explanation / Answer

Break creek quadrangle consist of out crops of an area and its contours.

First u need to drawn parallel lines which pass through same meeting points of an out crop and same contour.

For eg if an out crop A is ther in map.. and a contour 55 is passing through that out crops many times.. then u need to draw a line that passes through all those points. In this way u need to draw for all contoursm. These lines are strike.

And driction perpendicular to these lines where contour values are decreasing is dip direction.

Now u can take a cross section which include all formation in that map

Draw line through that cross section in map.

Place ur graph on that line

Mark each srike lines contour value in a reduced scale in ur graph(exactly above) u will get many points in ur graph..

Connect all points in a free hand draw.

Now mark outcrops in cross section in exactly above it

Now u got outcrops in surace only.. u need to find dip of formation

For that u need to list out and make a tabe on each strike lines on one column and different outcrops in rows. List out these meeting points and mark it in ur graph.

Drawlines through the continuous lines obtained for each outcrops that's ur dip of formation.

Thank you :)

Keep asking questions if u hav more doubts.

Happy chegging..
