ERTH 0335-01 Global Warming Fall 2017 My Courses / ERTHOSS01-F17R / Cann Tuesday, 19 September 2017 / Weekly retective writing #4: Absorption of weekly reflective writing #4: Absorption of infrared radiation by carbon dioxide Weekly reflecthe writing 4: Absorption of infrared radlation by carbon dioxide (CO) video demonstrating that carbon dicxide (C0,) absorbs intrared radiaton In this video Pieter Tans,a scientist at the National Oeanic and Admntnton, sts n tont ofanitraed video carera, and the image red by this IR video anmera is shown as a visbl.ight image on·conir screen Carbon daxide (CO) is then placed between Pleter Tans's face and the IR video camera by injecting CO, ito a tube As the amount of CO2 between the sclentist's face and the IR camera increases, the image of Tans's foce fades in the infrared camera For this week's efective eading assignment, we would lka you to discuss what this video teaches us about the greenhouse effect You can ind a copy of the video poted on Learn with ts asormen. why doeste scerasrs face dsappear on the nhared camera en te tbe fils upwith CO,? Based on his demo nanon, how do you expct CO, to interact with infrared radation in the Earth's atmosphere? More broadly, what does this demonstration show us about the greenhouse effect in the Eartn's atmosphene? For this last question, t might help to think about where intrared rediation found in the Earth's atmosphere and which direction & is on average count minimum eam will somamescrsh, losing unsaved inomation To avoid losing your work, you should compose your refection in a tle on your compuer and then out -and-pase your neflection into Leam MacBook Air 4 option command commandoptionExplanation / Answer
Carbon dioxide having the capability to absorb energy from infrared radiation and remit the energy after sometime. This makes Co2 to trap heat in the atmosphere. Co2 absorb the IR and the molecules start to vibrate and emit the IR. IR radiation are invisble to eyes and it's ranges from 0.7 to 14 micro meter. These IR radiation helps to detect the objects by their emission. Each objects having certain emission of heat, for eg.,rocks having the capability to trap the heat in the daytime and emit it in the night time and this will be captured by IR cameras and helps to classify the objects. The same thing happens here when injecting CO2 inbetween his face and IR camera.Co2 trap the heat in that place which means heat (IR radiation)emitted by his face is trapped by CO2 and makes his face to fade.Co2 traps the heat and emit it later this causes green house effect. IR radiation found everwhere in the atmosphere which means body which emit heat having IR radiation. due to sunlight soil, water, rock absorb the heat and emit it in the night time.
