Question
they have been many allegations of nursing shortage using both Healthcare planners and economists definition of shortages. the American Hospital Association complain of a nursing shortage in the 1950s and the 1960s and supported these claims by noting the high vacancy rates in registered nurse positions and the substitution of less highly trained licensed practical nurses for RN. Congress responded by passing the nurse training Act in 1964 which began a tradition of government-subsidization of nurses training between 1971 and the present their peers to have been a number of periods of adjustment in which highly vacancy rate were followed by policy to expand nurses training followed by reduction and shortages. explain the health care financing and economic principles as they apply to the course of action and what would be the more effective and efficient economically to best keep supply and demand for nurses jn alignment
Explanation / Answer
Ans.
The problem of scarcity of Registered Nurses have been prevalent for a long time now. The major economies suffering from this are USA , UK , Japan , African Nations etc. As there have been a drastic improvement in the living conditions of people , demand for specialised healthcare service is on rise and nurses play a major role In providing quality healthcare services . In many countries , Shortage of Registered Nurses were even caused by migration of nurses to developed nations. To become a RN , an individual must have completed a bachelors degree in Nursing or an Associate Degree
Health Care sector is not as simple as it seems , there are many complexities hidden. The two concepts of economics we must keep in mind while analysing this sector : 1) Resources are Scarce and demand of resources is never ending. 2) Economics Is all about human behaviour.
The problem of resource allocation is the main concert in devising the strategies of Healthcare Sector. The issue of Pricing , Opportunity cost in providing the best healthcare services etc should also be taken into consideration. In Healthcare sector , Healthcare providers are the service providers and patients are the consumers.
But the problem here is about the shortage of Registered Nurses . How this can be solved through financing and economic measures ? Let us discuss.
Demand for healthcare service is on rise which in turn implies that demand for nurses is on rise , whereas Supply of Nurses is not enough to meet the demands.
1 ) Hospitals and healthcare centres can induce the nurses to work more time by providing financial incentives .
2) The long term strategy can be to improve the educational condition of Nursing Institutons by taking in more applicants , building more infrastructure , Enhancing Career Prospects , Provide Scholarships etc.
3 ) Present nurses can be induced to become Nurse Educators so that they can provide real training to the upcoming Nurses.
4 ) Retired Nurses can be converted into Nurse Recruiters and they should be paid for each referral.
5 ) The PESTEL Theory and Systems Theory can be used to analyse the healthcare environment properly and then act accordingly .
6 ) Relocation of RN can be done as demand for RN is very high in Rural Areas but Supply is very less.
7) Nursing Recruitment can provide a competitive advantage to the hospital which can increase the financial performance .
8 ) The technology of Tele Medicine can be used in case of Registered Nurses too , where they'll be able to provide services to the patients from far areas too.
9 ) Management Support , Personal relationship and employment conditions should be improved in the Hospitals.
10 ) Many notable thinkers have proposed an idea to alter the Educational Curriculum , to make it more enriching and to add some more courses in the field of Nursing so as to offer wider choice to students .
These Points would be more efficient and effective , economically to keep Supply and Demand of Nurses in Alignment.
