Question
1. a.)Why is the Northwestern US [Cascade Range and Aleutians] volcanically active? Southern California is tectonically, but not volcanically active. Explain why. b.) Describe how thermal expansion and contraction mechanically weathers a rock mass. In generalwhere is the thermal gradient greatest at the rock surface or interior]? c.) Compare and contrast in your own words the two views extreme views of Earth surface processes. Which do you feel to be most accurate? Do some research and list real world examples to support your reasons why you decided which is more accurate. Be sure to look at both sides of this argument.Explanation / Answer
a) It is due to the reason that the pacific oceanic plate doesn't go for subduction in the region of southern California. Thus it has an seismic active area but the collision between these two plates results in the strike slip margin. Hence there is no volcanic activity over there.
b) The presence of sunlight's exposure on the rock surface for the longer duration of time deteriorate the strength of the existed bonds in minerals. Increase in temperature for the day time compel the rock to expend whereas the cooler environment at night again compel it to shrink below its original dimension. Thus a continuous change in size leads to deformation at atomic level and bonds get weaken. therefore eventually, the weathered surface is formed.
Gradient will be maximum at the surface of the rock and it result to the maximum impacted area for weathering.
C) The earth surface is as such dynamic as the subsurface is. thus there are several active agents are present (i.e. sunlight, chemicals, water, wind and living organisms) that help in changing it from one form to another.
The study of earth surface processes can be studied by geomorphic aspects and in the views of it, two extreme condition are formation and erosion of glaciers and sand dunes in extreme arid environment.
