This County Isn't Just Carbon Neutral- Its Carbon Negative Deep in the Himalayas, on the border between China and India, lies the Kingdom of Bhutan, which has pledged to remain carbon neutral for all time. In this illuminating talk, Bhutan's Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay shares his country's mission to put happiness before economic growth and set a world standard for environmental preservation.Explanation / Answer
Bhutan has ideally initiated a comprehensive approach to materialize a combination of social/environmental welfare and economic development which incorporates both the need to promote domestic economic progress as well as a global commitment to establish ecological optimality. In this regard,as stated by the honorable Prime Minister of Bhutan,Mr.Tshering Tobgay in the abovementioned TEDTalk presentation, the concept of Gross National Happiness(GNH) basically implies a holistic outlook to ensure a balance between economic welfare and socio-cultural enrichment along with ecological/environmental stability. This would expectedly facilitate a balanced developmental process which entails an overall happiness and well-being of the country rather than measuring or quantifying progress and development through some statistical indicators. Most importantly, validation of GNH intrinsically lies in the fact it negates any irresponsible and disbalanced economic progress without much consideration towards present environmental detriments that have pervaded all across our planet. It emphasizes on a more balanced developmental path through responsible economic development by incorporating environmental sustainability and optimal exploitation of natural resources.Furthermore,GNH also points out the significance of socio-cultural enrichment through preservation of local cultural values, customs and traditions that would contribute to the psychological well-being of people.
As an important sub-topic within the main framework of GNH,Mr.Tobgay forcefully asserted the urgency to bring about a collaborative commitment to prevent global climate change or global warming. He enumerated various administrative initiatives that have already been adopted by Bhutan to prevent the further extent of global warming to set some examples to the rest of world so that these can be implemented at an elaborative scale. Some of these measures include enhancing green energy resources such as forest resources, preservation and proper maintenance of local ecological resources such as national parks and wildlife sanctuaries within the country, subsidizing various inputs/resources for rural families such as electricity to prevent carbon emission through use of firewoods, investment on alternative energy resources such as electric cars and bio-efficient vehicles and so forth. Many of such initiatives are actively intended to minimize the toxic environmental impacts of carbon emission not only within Bhutan but also externally. As stated by Mr.Tobgay, these preventive measures have enabled the country to become carbon negative and not only carbon nuetral. This would expectedly invoke a much improved world for everyone in terms of better health conditions, psychological well being and ecological sustainability therebyleaving behind a better environmental future for our posterior generations. It is an implicit imploration to all the global citizens to be a part of this process so that the world as a whole can reap the fruits of good environmental practices.
Therefore,GNH is certainly an unique and deservedly commendable approach that scientifically advocates a comprehensive human development process transcending the traditional and parochial indicators of socio-economic growth such as GDP,domestic production level, consumer spending, corporate profits and so forth.Hence,GNH can be ideally conceived as an universal paradigm to bring about a scientific amalgamation of environmental and ecological betterment and socio-economic and cultural evolution which needs to be promoted at a global scale. The commitment towards achieving carbon negativity is not merely an example or an empirical case study. It is a much needed wake up call for the global community to take part in this collective goal to offer happiness and contentment to ourselves as well as to the rest of the humanity, both present and future.
