Question

For each of the following changes for society in which the Malthusian model applies indicate whether i)long run population and ii)long run food per person will increase, decrease or remain unchanged:

4. the population converts to a new religion requiring every male and every female to wait until the age of 30 before getting married. Suppose that previously, everyone got married before the age of 20. (assume only married women give birth). (birth rate schedule shifts down).

Change in population: ____ __   Change in Food per person ______

Explanation / Answer

According to Malthus, if unchecked through preventive and positive measures, the population grows in geometric progression where as food supply grows in arithmetic progression.

a requiremnet of wiating until age of 30 is made then the population growth will get measured and will be controlled to which the population growth will decrease.

And as population growth decreases then there will be more output/food than before change which could make balance.

Thus, Change in population: decreases Change in Food per person increases.
