This is an online article appeared in New york times
Bradsher, Keith."China Sees Hints of a Past Threat: Inflation" Nytimes posted 10 September 2018.
Article summary: Consumer prices have increased for last quarter in China. Government officials give following reasons:
1. Flood damagin crops and pigs kulled to fight swine flu
2. Increasing tariff by USA has increased prices
3. Increase in oil prices have increased oil bill for China which is largest oil consumer.
Western experts believe that China keeps inflation figures understatedbecause has China has history that people may unite on this issue which Chinese government does nort want.
Western experts also believe that Chinese economy has the potential to absorb this inflationary pressure as their economy is slowing down and domestic suppy will increase due to its higher investments in human and physical capital in last decade.
Chinese people however are fearful about increasing prices as their budgets collapse. chineses government is adviced not to increase its speding as expansionary fiscal policy may lead to increasing inflation in China.
My reflection: Chinese economy is having inflation but it is not worrisome as it is in some other countries like Venezuela. Supply side shocks in primary commodities have mainly created this situation which is temporary. Chinese government has other important issue also to tackle like depreciating currency and economic slowdown.
