They were not obsessed with death, they were obsessed with the life after death. They believed in life after death. After the death of the body, they believed there was a continuation and hence everything they kept in their tombs was for their afterlife. They were passionate about life as they built the tombs in sandy deserts. Sandy desert environments are non-corrosive. Mummification was long and expensive and they were buried along with riches and possessions. But many of their deities were associated with death.
