Explanation / Answer
1. For ductile deformation of rock to occur, the deformation must take place at a rapid rate- False.
The above statement is false because ductile deformation is the bending or flowing of rocks when the rocks are subjected to stress. The rocks are folded or bended instead of fracturing to form faults or joints due to ductile ductile deformation, and the resulting structures of ductile deformation are called folds. Folds may form due to compressional stresses or shear stresses acting over considerable time. Because rocks that we normally consider brittle deformation can behave in a ductile manner resulting in such folds when the strain rate is low and/or the temperature is high.
2. If the block on the far side of a fault is displaced to the left, it is a left-lateral strike-slip fault. If the block is displaced to the right, it is a right lateral strike-slip fault.- False
The above statement is false. The left-lateral strike slip fault is known as sinistral fault and right lateral strike slip fault is known as dextral fault. Sinistral fault is defined by the left side movement of the block on the opposite side of the fault from an observer and dextral fault is defined by the right side movement of the block on the opposite side of the fault from an observer.
3. It is the general consensus of geologists that Earth’s formation process was unique and that the other terrestrial planets came into existence in a very different way. - False
Terrestrial planets are terrestrial or Earth-like planets because they are similar size and they have same composition. Terrestrial planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. They are made up of rocks or metals and hard surface. It differs from other planets that lack a solid surface. Terrestrial planets also have a molten heavy metal core, few moons, and topological features such as valleys, volcanoes and craters.
4. The further rock is from the spreading center from where it is originally came, the older it is.- True
The statement is true because spreading center is divergent plate margin. Due to movement of plates away from each other, the crust become thinner and weaker. Hot magma plume comes to the the surface and form new crust. The older crust are moving towards subduction zone due to pushing of newer crust and convection force within asthanosphere. So, with increasing distance from spreading center, the rocks become older and at the spreading center, the rocks are younger.
5. Subduction zones usually occur very close to spreading centers- False
subduction zone is where one plate subducted under the another plate and spreading center is where two plates diverts from each other. They are not occured very close to spreading center.
6. Earth’s crust can be divided into an oceanic type and a continental type.- True
Because the earths crust is the upper part of the earth which is made up of solid rocks of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary origin. Crust is chemically distinct from the underlying mantle. Earth crust is two types such as oceanic and continental crust. oceanic crust is 5 to10 km thick and the thickness of continental crust varies from 30 to 70km.
7. Earth’s magnetic field acts as a shield and protects delicate living tissue from solar radiation.-True
he Earth's magnetic field deflects most of the solar wind and protects the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation. Because harmull solar charged particles would enter through the ozone layer and affect the earth.
8. In the subduction zone, continental crust always subducts beneath oceanic crust.- False
The statement is false because there are generally two types of subduction zones. such as continental-oceanic, oceanic-oceanic subduction zone. continental-oceanic subduction zone is where a oceanic plate subducted under the continental lithosphere and oceanic-oceanic subduction zone is where oceanic plate moves under the another oceanic plates. So, continental crust always subducts beneath oeanic crust is false.
