Groundwater Use
Water table
depth in feet
FACT Well NE Well NE Well Average
Spring 2014 181’ 195’ 182’ 186’
Spring 2016 216’ 214’ 210’ 213’
On campus there are three water wells. Measurements to the top
of the water table have been shown above. Using this data answer the following questions.
1. What is the difference in water table depth (using only the averages) between 2014 and
2016?
2. The campus is roughly 1 square mile (m2 ). Using your answer from number one, calculate
how many liters, gallons and acre-feet of water have been depleted from the aquifer between
2014 and 2016 beneath the campus.
3. The town is roughly 143.6 square miles (m2 ). Using your answer from number one, calculate
how many liters, gallons and acre-feet of water have been used from the aquifer between 2014
and 2016 beneath the town.
4. How do your answers from number 3 and 4 compare to a Reservoir capacity (just over
500,000 acre-feet).
Explanation / Answer
1. What is the difference in water table depth (using only the averages) between 2014 and
2016?
213’ - 186’ = 27'
2) Area of campus = 1 m^2
Depth of water depleted = 27' = 27 * 0.3048 m = 8.2296 m
Volume = Area * Depth = 1m^2 * 8.2296 m = 8.2296 m^3 = 8.2296 * 1000 liters = 8229.6 liters
Water that have been depleted from the aquifer between 2014 and 2016 beneath the campus = 8229.6 liters
= 8229.6* 0.264172 gallons
= 2174.03032 gallons
= 2174.03032 * 3.06889*10^-6 acre -feet
= 0.006671855232433 acre -feet
3) Area of town = 143.6 m^2
Depth of water depleted = 27' = 27 * 0.3048 m = 8.2296 m
Volume = Area * Depth = 143.6 m^2 * 8.2296 m = 1181.771 m^3 =1181.771 * 1000 liters = 1181771 liters
Water that has been used from the aquifer between 2014 and 2016 beneath the town = 1181771 liters
= 1181771 * 0.264172 gallons
= 312190.8705 gallons
= 312190.8705 * 3.06889*10^-6 acre -feet
= 0.9580787690501 acre-feet
4) The reservoir capacity = 500,000 acre-feet
It is much much bigger than answers from number 3 and 4 which are 0.006671855232433 acre -feet and 0.9580787690501 acre-feet respectively.
