Question

I'm learning about vorticity in class right now and have a few questions because I don't understand the process entirely. Please respond stating the reasons why/how these things occur also.

1. Why is the absolute voriticity rarely negative in the Northern Hemisphere?

2. Does the upper-tropospheric ageostrophic wind wector circulate clockwise or counterclockwise about a cut off low in the Northern Hemisphere.

3. Would a hurricane be an intense voriticity maximum?

4. Could you help we undersant the depiction or description of 500 mb voritivty and vorticity advenction?

Explanation / Answer

1.Air travels in small parcels. The voriticity is helpful in the measurement of the air parcels. Imagine soap bubbles from a blower. they spin and they float and they flow in the direction of the wind. In the same way the air parcels also spin and travel along the flow but on a fixed axis. when the voriticity is in the clockwise direction then it is called as positive voriticity and when it is in anticlockwise direction, then it is negative.

In northen hemisphere, the parcels rotate in the anticlockwise direction and hence the voriticity is negative.

2. in the northern hemisphere they circulate in the anticlockwise direction.

3. As the low pressure is favourable for hurricanes, the nothern hemisphere has that. due to the high rotation of the parcel on its own axis, the shear increases and this increases the wind flow to high. And this makes that the intense voriticity maximum can be a hurricane.

4. 500 mb means 500 millibars. The higher value moves to the lowe values and you can see the same in a map also. The higher temperaure moves to the lower. 500mb is the height at which the voriticity occurs and the advection takes place.
