Question

*Please answer the 2 following questions. For clarification please provide a short explanation for the answer you chose.

please Note: Side chain is abbreviated as SD and Amino acid will be abbreviated as AA
1. Apsartic Acid and Histidine are both at pH of 5. If these two Amino Acids happen to be next to each other in a polypeptide chain.. what would be the result of this occurence?
a.) The SDs of these AA will be uncharged & with no effect.
b.) The SDs of these AA will be charged & will attract each other.
c.) The SDs of these AA will be charged & will repel each other.
d.) needs more information to answer

2. There is an AA Lysine at pH 7. Which choice best describes where u predict this
AA would be found?

a.) This AA is hydrophobic and will be on the surface of a protein (I.e. residing in middle area
of a membrane)
b.) This AA is hydrophilic and will be on the surface of a protein (I.e. residing in middle area
of a membrane)

c.) This AA is hydrophobic and will be in the interior of a protein (I.e. residing in middle area
of a membrane)

d.) This AA is hydrophilic and will be in the interior of a protein(I.e. residing in middle area
of a membrane)

e.) needs more information to answer

Explanation / Answer

1.) Even though the two have the same pH the structure of the molecules themselves will tell you what you need to know. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspartic_acid#Other_biochemical_roles http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Histidine the carbonyl, alcohol, amine and double bonds will repel each other due to lone pair non bonding electrons. So, The will repel one another. 2.) Lysine is a polar molecule, meaning that it possesses both positive "bonded electrons" and negative "non-bonded" electrons. The kicker is that water is a polar molecule so, Lysine is a hydrophillic molecule. Next, Lysine is metabolized to help in the formation of many different bodily processes. mainly in the production of Acetly-CoA by means of transamination with a-ketoglutarate. All of this is used in cellular respiration that occurs within the cellular body. So, it will reside on the outside and is hydrophillic Please PM me if you need any further help =}
