Between 1763 and 1776, King George and the British Parliament clashed with the American colonists over several issues: westward expansion, taxes, trade restrictions, smuggling, local political control, harbor/port access, physical acts of aggression, etc. After reading the chapters and learning about the many causes of conflict, choose one that you think was most upsetting and difficult for the colonists (political, economic,social,personal), Share your opinion on the discussion board using facts from the textbook to support and explain. Explanation / Answer

One source of the conflict was mainly derived from the and British soldiers. During that period of time, it was a common understanding in the Britain that professional troops who were sent to the colonies are worthy of full credit for the victory of British Empire in the war. But if we look at the reality, about 40 percent of the total regular army personnel who participated in the war from the side of Britain were enlisted in America. There was a regular complaint from American soldiers during and after the end of the war that the major role played by America in the victory of this war was greatly underestimated by the public of Great Britain.

For the part played by the British soldiers, they mourned the incompetence of the colonial troops. In their opinion during the war, the colonial troops were not participating actively and in fact, they were useless and were lacking any sense of duty and were more inclined to return home even in the peak of the campaign when there were having their major part to play or they were not given their compensation on time. All these charges were refuted by the colonial troops and they had a lot of complaints against the arrogant behavior of British troops along with the contemptuousness in dealings with the colonials.

In fact, there were some incidents of conflict between the British troops and the colonial civilians who were not so inclined to offer food and shelter to the British and the civilians had a lot of complaints regarding the bad behavior of British troops towards them. Pennsylvania Quakers, as pacifists, voted against appropriating funds for the war effort, and Massachusetts and New York also took a stand against the quartering of British troops in their colonies. All these actions were seen as antagonistic by British Parliament, and King George III and they treated as against the recognition of the attempts of British troops to defend and secure imperial territories.

One of the other areas where there was a conflict can be seen as taxation. A lot of profit was earned by the colonies from the war. A large inflow of British currency had resulted from the Military contracts and expenditures by British troops. There was prosperity in the trade and the trade began to start between American and the French West Indies. This trade was considered as illegal during the peacetime and it was treated as morally reprehensible during a war against the French but in reality, a lot of profit was earned from this kind of trade. At the same time, there was an increase of debt on British from 72 million pounds before the war to 132 million at its end. In order to pay down this tax amount, a land tax at home was imposed by the British along with the excise tax on many commonly traded goods.
