ANSWER SHEET (100 points) UNDERSTANDING STRATIGRAPHY (79 points) Answer the following questions about Stratigraphic Section #1: 1. List the letters of four loci (locus) of stratigraphic deposits in this section: 2. List the letters of three features in this section: E W trash Pit was wtd 3. Why does the trash pit have three levels (C, Q, P)? th at wrzs diffrrent po ints in Himt 4. Are strata J and L roughly contemporary (yes/no)? 5. Are M and G contemporary (yes/no)? 6. Why do you think there is a bottle at the bottom of G? 7. The mammoth skull (X) does not appear to have been intentionally buried. Name three taphonomic processes that might have separated it from the rest of the skeleton: 8. Give the stratigraphic sequence (oldest to most recent) of M, E, U, and C, and describe what you think they are: Sequence oldest-youngest: Description of M:

Explanation / Answer

1) M, E, U, C can be a locus for deposits as they are form in homegeneous layer(R), it look like that at that time and at that place condition was favorable for generation of deposits.

2) L, J,W, G, N

Here L, J, W, N are scours (explain in 4th answer)

whereas G is mainly form by burrows (explain in 5th and 6th answer).

3) at different time different material is deposited which are characterized in three layers C Q P

4) J and L strata are Contemporary in age but can vary in deposited material. Both are form by scouring action. (scours are of spoon like shape and form by wind, water, glacier).

5) M And G are not contemporary in age as well as in deposited material. Most is deposited first and G at later part. Generally uppermost layer is always a soil layer hence G can be soil layer because presence of vegetation.

6) this can be burrow form by small organism look like bottle.

7) burial, preservation and diagenesis are three processes that are responsible for this type of condition

The hard part of skeleton always remains as it is because small organisms cannot destroy hard part that is bones.

8) a)E, C, U, M(basically it can be deposits)

b) E= it is form first

c) C= it is form at second stage

d) U= it is form at third stage (looks like it is seal rock)

e) M= it is form at forth stage(it is also look like a seal rock).

9) K is a soil layer

F is a rock and it is completely diifer from K

hence K and F are shown different.

10) E, C, U, M are showing some type of deposits present over there.

They are very much younger

The deposits are perfectly sealed by E layer
