Question
List and discuss two upstream industries that impact rolled steel production, e, g., transportation. What is the significance of each industry as it pertains to environment (such as the number of tons of ore it digs up or transports, or the amount of fuel it consumes or how many acres land it processes)? What is the main source of negative impact does each industry have on the environment (is it air pollution or water pollution, and discuss the source)? How can these upstream industries become more sustainable?
An Upstream industry (for any industry) is closer to the source. So upstream will include exploration, extraction, refining.
Explanation / Answer
The upstream industries are transportation and construction. Transportation industry produces more heat than transportation by production of steel and other raw materials. It needs more water as well. About 98% of the ore is used for steel making and transportation industry digs around 80% of the total amount of ore dug in a day. Both transportation and construction factories cover 60% of the area. Main source of pollution in transportation and construction is air pollution. The source is the release of carbondioxide and heat as predominant pollutants.
