Question

MyTown Evaluation: Mass Wasting After their volcanic hazards discussions, several of MyTown's residents who had looked into Mt. Rainier in Washington State ran across information about the OSO Landslide that occurred in Washington in 2014 and killed over 40 people. Subsequent to reading about mass wasting disasters, they have become concerned with a proposal to build a new neighborhood in one of three proposed locations (see Map file) They fear a landslide could occur and wipe out the new neighborhood MyMayor's office takes these concerns seriously and asks you and your classmates to determine which of the location would be safest/least likely to experience mass wasting, and why it is safer than the others. MyTown is very interested in building a new neighborhood somewhere near town n order to provide housing for the growing number of people moving i to participate in the copper mining operations. Based on your studies in GLG 101 (and any additional information you can obtain online, etc.) answer these questions (10 pts) 1. Which of the three locations would likely be safestleast likely to experience a landslide? (2 pts) 2. What factors would likely make the other two locations more dangerous than the best location? Give at least one factor for each of the two more dangerous sites. (2 pts 1 pt for each site) the geologic map might suddenly trigger a landslide? (2 pts) flow in the future? What is it? (2 pts) 3. What type of natural event suggested by a natural feature shown on 4. Is there a man-made structure that could contribute to a mud/debris 5. What might be a different location in the map area - other than the three choices given on the map that would be an even safer place (at least with respect to landslide hazards) in which to build the proposed new neighborhood? (1 pt.) Why is it even safer? (1 pt)

Explanation / Answer

1) Location number "3" is the safest location as per the land slides processes are concerned.

2) At location number "1", the fracture planes are in such a way that if land slide occur all the material will come over location number 1. At location number "2" if landslide occur then the foundation for location number 2 will become unstable and hence there is a danger of damage associated with location number "2".

3) Earthquake can suddenly trigger a landslide

4) Yes the reservoir behind the dam can contribute to a mud/debris flow in future.

5) The area around downtown is most stable as the fault plane is going towards right in map and hence downtown is unefected by the damages caused by landslide apart from this the area around downtown have very low chances of debris/mud flow.
