Question

Name: Mcvhin écvein Objective: Period: 2 The objective of this project is to determine and y life. analyze the gradient of two different items found in your Cartography is the scilence of making maps. You have been studying topographic maps which show land surface with contour lines. An important feature shown on a topographic map is the gradient which is a change in elevation over a distance. In this project you will determine and compare the gr stairs leading into a trailer and a ramp going into a trailer the shape of the slope) of the land, . Using your notes or prior knowledge, explain how you could analyze a map to determine the steepest slope. Procedure: Follow the directions for determining the slope of the stairs and the ramp, using the diagrams below Step 1: Measure the elevation of the stairs and ramp (in inches) and write it on the appropriate diagram A-B Step 2: Measure the distance of the stairs and ramp (in feet) and write it on the appropriate diagram -elechen inches 2. Calculate the gradient of the stairs in the bax below 3. Calculate the gradient of the stairs in the box below 4. What is the gradient of the stairs? what is the gradient of the ramp? 5. a) Which had the steepest gradient, the ramp or the stairs? b) Explain how you determined your answer by comparing the two gradients

Explanation / Answer

1. If the contour interval is constant then the contour having least distance between then have the steepest slope.

2. Gradient of stairs=27inches/2.9feet

=2.25feet/2.9feet(There are 12 inches in 1 feet)

=0.77

3. Same question as that of question number 2.

4.

Gradient of ramp= 26inches/2.7feet

=2.166feet/2.6feet(There are 12 inches in 1 feet)

=0.833

Gradient of stairs=0.77

Gradient of ramp=0.83

5. a) Gradient of ramp is steeper compare to stairs.

5. b) Gradient of ramp is greater than gradient of stairs because in the case of stairs the difference in elavation between point A and B is 27 inches which is covered in horizontal distance of 2.9 feets while for ramp the difference in elavation between point A and B is 26 inches which is covered in horizontal distance of 2.6 feets hence ramp is more steeper than stairs.
