In the US, the typical workers works about 32 hours per week; in Singapore, the typical worker works about 43 hours a week. Americans are likely A)better off B)worse off than GDP numbers suggest because they enjoy A)less B)more C)equal leisure compared to Singapore.Explanation / Answer
To find which country is better off :
We first find the ratio of GDP per capita of Singapore relative to US and Per workers hours of Singapore relative to Per worker hours relative to US.
Singapore GDP relative to US = 60,000 / 52,000 = 1.15
It means they both are almost identical as the ratio is close to 1.
While the Per worker hours of Singapore relative to US = 43 / 32 = 1.34.
It means the per worker hours is more in Singapore than US, comparing to its GDP relative to US.
1.34 > 1.15
So America is better off that GDP number suggest because they enjoy more leisure compare to Singapore.
-
As we can see that to produce almost same number of GDP ( GDP of Singapore relative to US is close to 1), the workers in Singapore divot more hours than workers in US. So US workers enjoy more leisure and are better off may be because of more efficiency and productivity.
