The term "Global City" is often confused with "Megacity" and other terms that describe large, populous urban areas. Global Cities, however, possess some specific characteristics that distinguish them from other cities in the world. What are these characteristics? What is the importance of global cities in the process of globalization?

The term 'Global city' & ''Mega City" is totally different as explained below :-

A global city is one of world economic importance. It is internationally recognised as having influence on global issues, ie Washington, Paris, London etc. It has significant cultural opportunities and can be accessed easily (airport, port). It also has significant infrastructure, i.e. internet, wi-fi, mobile phone networks etc. A megacity is distinguished from a global city because it has a population of over 10 million people and it continues to grow rapidly. It has high levels of crime, poverty and social deprivation and is usually found in developing countries, where global influence is much smaller, and economic stability is weaker. Examples of megacities are Jakarta, Indonesia; Mumbai, India and Mexico City, Mexico.

There are some characteristics which distinguishes a global city from any other cities :-

1.International, first-name familiarity; whereby a city is recognised without the need for a political subdivision. For example. although there are numerous cities and other political entities with the name Paris or variations on it.

2. Active influence and participation in international events and world affairs.
