ing on the Edge: Unit3: Convergent Plate Boundaries Because of its elevation (4,392 m), relief, hydrothermal alteration, ice cap, glacier-fed radial valleys, and proximity to suburbs of the Seattle-Tacoma area, Mount Rainier is the most threatening volcano in the Cascodes. its next eruption could produce volcanic ash, lava flows, and avalanches of imtensely hot rock and volcanic gases, colled pyrociastic flows. Some of these events swiftly melt snow and ice and could produce torrents of meltwater that erode loose rock and become rapidly fiowing slurries of mud and boulders known as lahars, which is the greatest risk at the volcano, rather than from an eruption itself Liv Locations monitoring stations on the volcano RAINER takima e call it low probability, high consequence," says | steven Bailey, Pierce County, Washington's director of emergency management. "It's a low probability it's going to occur in our lifetime. But if and when it does, the 5Mies consequences are going to be huge. nments/plate,tectonics/hgcse woleonoes manage htm Above left, modned from usGS Fact Sheet 2oa 3062, ttmExplanation / Answer
Mount rainier volcano is situated at the convergent plate boundary. at this boundary two plates move to each other and collide. in this collision densed plate subduct into another less dense plate. when subduted plate comes under high PT contions , it melts , and this melt of the plate goes to the surface through the convection current. this melt material comes to the surface through the volcanoes. MOunt rainier is one of the example of it.
mount rainier is an active volcano. last volcanic activity occurs in 1894-95. and its possible that it will erupt again. we all are familiar with the theory of the continental drift, according to that plates are movable but their speed is too slow to measure. some plate move only around 1 meter in 100 to 150 year. this is really a slow process. but when tectonic setting are disturbed under the surfaceor plates destruct, they release earthquake waves, which comes to the surface and surface shaked.. this is called earthquake. so we have to sure about that this area is at the hisg risk of earthquake. when will earthquake comes , it means tectonic setting will alsoi disturbed then there is a chance to occur volcanic activity through mount rienier. now this area is highly populated, but real threat is lahars instead of lava flow. because mount reinier contains 25 glaciers and they having around 1 cubic mile water. when volcanic eruption occur these glacier will be melt at lahars generated which will affect large area.
as we can say that this is the less possible high consequences condition, this area is at the watch alert. becuase it will not erupt imminent but surely it will erupt and repurcussions will be destructive. and watch alert say that volcano is exhibiting heightened or escalating unrest with increase potential of eruption, timeframe uncertain.
