4) PLATE TECTONICS talic 10 Mit. Everest 8850 meters Land-29,2% Mountains Avg. elevasion of Avg. depth of oceans 3729 meters magn Deep ocean Trenches Ocean. 70.9% 24 20 6 12 0 Millons of square kilometers Percent of Earth's Surface 50 00 50 200 250 300 350 400 40500 20 40 100 Percentage of area Percentages of the Earth's surface at different elevations are plotted above. This is called the Hypsographic Curve. a.) Why are there two elevations that cover so much of the surface of the earth (why is there a bimodal distribution of elevations)? (4 points) b.) Why is there so much of the earth's surface at or near sea-level? (3 points) c.) Why haven't the tallest mountains (e.g. the Himalayas) eroded down to sea-level? Why haven't the deepest ocean trenches (e.g. the Mariana Trench) filled up with sediment? (3 points)Explanation / Answer
b) Well 70% of the world is sea, so it would only be normal if 80% of the earths mass(29% total ) be at sea level and other factor Erosion and gravity is the factor The material tht erode goes down towards the sea due to the influence of gravity
c) The Mariana Trench is located in an area of old seafloor, made up of lava, which is dense and causes the seafloor to settle further. Plus, since the trench is so far away from any rivers, it does not get filled with sediment like many other oceanic trenches, which also contributes to its extreme depth
The tallest mountain is the mt Everest Due to the plates pushing the Indian plate northward and under Asia, the Himalayas continue to rise other than that The lowest part of Mount Everest consist of granite, one of the toughest rocks in the world. This lets Everest better withstand erosion compared to other, less hard mountains.but there will be a point in which the rate of ersion will exceed the pushing up plate in the mountain which will atlast worn down
a) The mount everest are formed by the continential collision during the old edge of pangea and it is still rising at rate of 1 cm/year so it is the boarder of the the two continent which makes it to have a huge surface
The Mariana is one of many deepwater ocean trenches formed by the geologic process of subduction. This occurs when a plate topped by oceanic crust(Pacific plate) is subducted beneath another plate topped by oceanic crust(Philippine plate) . Tectonic forces eventually warp the Pacific plate so that it makes a near-vertical dive into the Earth's interior, at seabed level the plate dips at a relatively gentle angle and due to the huge tectonic plate it covers a long surface of earth The deepest point of the trench is 11000m
