Question

What stereotypes were called-up around the phenomena of the recent Los Vegas shootings; how did the media portray the individual who had carried out the shooting in relation to media portrayals of other incidents of mass violence (protests, police treatment of different ethnicities, etc.)? How might ideas that emerge around acts of mass violence make non-violent journeys an ethnically and/or racially-inflected narrative? Finally, what might the way the telling of “stories” of heroism are written into Beowulf tell us about current versions of hero and anti-hero stories/narratives that are emerging in our own media-saturated times?

Explanation / Answer

The role of media around the Los Vegas shootings is quiet neutral as compared to other such incidents where individual or individuals of other ethnicities were involved (especially the south east asian countries). This is probably because of the origin of the shooter as he belonged from America only, if the shooter was from some muslim or south east asian country or from other racially-inflected minority then the case would be altogether different from the one we have seen during recent Los Vegas shootings.

As in the Beowulf the hero travels great distances to prove his strength at impossible odds against supernatural demons and beasts and the story is from the hero prospective while during these days of negative advertisement the shooter or the villian gets all the attention from the media, who try to sell the news by picking up the ethnicities of the culprits.
