Need some help on question 3. Thanks
16. Using the olivine phase diagram, answer the following questions a. If you started to crystallize a liquid of composition X: At what temperature would the first crystals appear? What composition would the crystals be? At T=1500 °C: i. ii. iii. 1. What is the proportion of crystals to melt? 2. What is the composition of the melt? 3. What is the composition of the crystals? Sold iv. At what temperature does the last drop of liquid disappear? ) v. What is the final composition of the crystals at the end of crystallization? o 38 1900- Liquid 1700 1500 1300 200 Olivine Solid Solution 100 Fo 20 40 60 80 Fa %Fo CAExplanation / Answer
16.a.iii) At T= 1500oC
1) The proportion of crystal to melt:
amtliq = Fo70 - Fo38 = 32
amtsolid = Fo38- Fo20 = 18
So, proportion of liquid/solid = 32/18 = 1.78
2) Composition of the melt is Fo20Fa80
3) Composition of crystals is Fo70Fa30.
