Question

In Part B, you will analyze a map in order to understand how mega-regions form in North America.

The pattern of urban expansion is clear. Each new mode of transportation increased travel speed and thus reduced travel times, enabling people to move farther away from the city center. Today, cities often have multiple business districts, some of them at or near the outer edges of the city. This raises the question of what happens when cities that are in close proximity expand outward. The answer is a mega-region, an area of urban development filling in the gaps between existing cities, as they sprawl into each other. The largest settlement agglomeration in the United States, located on the East Coast and home to more than 40 million people, was the nation's first mega-region.
