Question

We are going to calculate some gradients, then use the results to think about flooding, and the nature of streams/rivers. You may want to write down numerical answers as you go. Calculate the straight line gradient in ft/mi from point A to point B, which is from the source of Chittenango Creek at Cazenovia Lake, to the town of Chittenango. QUESTION 34 ***Chittenango Creek Question Set*** We are going to calculate some gradients, then use the results to think about flooding, and the nature of streams/rivers. You may want to write down numerical answers as you go. Calculate the straight line gradient in ft/mi from point B to point C which is from the town of Chittenango to the mouth of Chittenango creek at Oneida Lake. QUESTION 35 *** Chittenango Creek Question Set *** Knowing what you know from the two calculated gradients, which of the following would be true regarding the nature of the stream south of Chittenango vs. north of Chittenango? e South of Chittenango would be a tight v shape valley, with high energy and high erosion, North of Chittenango would have a well developed floodplain with lower energy water. o South of Chittenango would have a well developed floodplain with lower energy water, North of Chittenango would have tight v shaped valley with higher energy water. e South of Chittenango would have a well developed floodplain, with high energy and high erosion, North of Chittenango would have a tight v-shaped valley with lower energy water. • The stream would have similar characteristics both south and north of the town of Chittenango. QUESTION 36 *** Chittenango Creek Question Set *** Based on your gradient answer, the following image was probably taken. O South of Chittenango e North of Chittenango

Explanation / Answer

Calculate the straight line Gradient in feet from point A to point B which is from the source of Chittenango creek at Cazenovia Lake to the town of Chittenango.

Answer -  Gradient = vertical distance (elevation difference (AB)) divided by horizontal distance (HD)

Elevation - 1196 feet at Cazenovia lake

Elevation - 450 feet at Chittenango town

Cazenovia lake to Chittenango distance = 9.87 km//6.13 mi

Therefore Gradient = (1196-450) / 9.87 = 75.58 feet/km or (1196-450) / 6.13 = 121.7 feet/mile

Question 34 -

Calculate the straight line Gradient in feet from point B to point C which is from the town of Chittenango creek to the mouth of Chittenango creek at lake Oneida.

Elevation - 450 feet at Chittenango town

Elevation - 361 feet at Oneida lake –

Chittenango town to Oneida lake distance = 18.78 km / 11.67 miles

Therefore Gradient = (450- 361) / 18.78 = 4.74 feet/km or (450-361) / 11.67 = 7.62 feet/mile

Question 35

Knowing what you know from the two calculated gradients, which of the following will be true regarding the nature of the stream South of Chittenango vs North of Chittenango?

Answer - South of Chittenango would have a well developed floodplain with lower energy water (because of the low gradient, the lateral erosion capacity of the stream increases, resulting into extensive floodplain formation. Also because of the lower energy of water, deposition processes takes over erosion processes) AND North of Chittenango would have a tight V-shaped valley (again because of a very high gradient) with high energy water (higher the gradient, higher is the water velocity. This increases the erosive power of a river, resulting into V-shaped valleys.)
