GEOL 1114 Exercise to assess student achievement of the following Possess a foundation in geology prerequisite for higher level geology course l learning outcome: GEOL 1114 Assessment Instructions: Turn in a paragraph (5-10 sentences) contrasting activities at convergent, divergent, and transform tectonic plate boundaries. Your paragraph needs to include the following: General directions of plate motion at each boundary Type of extrusive igneous rocks, if any, formed at each boundary. One example each of a convergent, divergent, and transform plate boundary. 1. 2. 3. Paper is due start of class, Tuesday, November 28.Explanation / Answer
Ans.
There are three types of plate boundary - Divergent, Convergent, Transform plate -
1. Divergent plate - Divergent boundaries occur at oceanic ridges. In this boundary along which plates moves away from each other. In the process of plate depration the magma rises up from the asthenosphere and fills the gap thus created. In this way new crust is created along the trailling edges of diverging plates. And this phenomenon is called sea floor- spreading.
Types of igneous activity - Basaltic igneous activity occuring in this settings. In this activity of mid oceanic ridges Basalt and Gabbro are prodused. The mid oceanic basalts is known as tholiettic basalt.
Examples - of divergent plates boundaries - Mid atlantic ridges.
2. Convergent Plate boundaries - Here two plates approach each other and leading edge of one plate slips down under the other at an angle of 45 degree. Also called subduction zone occure as the deep see trenches. And second types of plates movement collision of each other plates.
Igneous activity - in this plates Basaltic and Andesitic composition of volcanism ocuring.Ophiolits found along collision plate boundaries.
Example - The China sub plates collide indian plates resultant formation of Himalyan mountain.
3. Transform plate tectonics - Here plates slide past one another and no production or destruction of lithosphere.
Example - San Andreas fault.
