what has to happen to make a fossil
decay rates
how does the Grand Canyon illustrate fossil and rock strata history
what did Trilobites illustrate
why would a common ancestor not look like an intermediary
Why was the Tiktaalik fossil most interesting
link China, feathered therapod dinosaurs, fossils - what is the importance
speculation - tree down scenario or ground up scenario
why was the ocean open for new animals to move into it
Don't forget to include:
A demonstration of a scientific understanding of evolution
Your personal journey of discovery related to the concept of evolution
Philosophical, theological, and sociological reflections
Your critique and evaluation of the ideas presented in the book using your scientific understanding of the process of evolution
--You can choose to include these under each chapter heading or as a summary at the end or both. However it makes sense to you, but be sure to include all the points.
Explanation / Answer
Fossils are the remains of ancient organisms. They are formed when the remains of the dead organisms are preserved instead of getting decayed. They are preserved under some suitable sets of conditions. Preservation of hard parts like shells, detachment from atmosphere (so that atmpsopheric processes don not render the organism to decay), sedimentation and permanent covering to ensure efficient fossilization, a suitable chemical environment and effect of certain diagenetic processes are the suitable sets of conditions for fossilization. The processes of fossilization include permineralization, authigenic mineralization, moulds and casts, carbonization, adpression, replacement and crystallization, bioimmuration, molecular preservation etc.
Decay is one of the important taphonomic process of fossilization. Decay rates are controlled by the following:
The Grand Canyon is an important place as it represents a wide variety of fossils of orgamisms of different and varied ages in the Earth's history and thus, helps to study rock starta and the reconstruction of past events. The fossils are contained in a wide variety of rocks. Terrestrial fossils- leaves, dragonflies, tracks; Recent fossils- sloth bones, hair, dung, Californoa condor bones; Marine fossils- bryozoans, sponges, burrows, stromatolites, trilobites, crinoids, brachiopodes, corals etc. are found here.
Trilobites illustrate important geological phenomenon. The first appearance of triolobites, or the first appearance datum (FAD) was from the Early Cambrian. So, trilobites were generated during Cambrian explosion. They became extinct at the end of Permian when a mass extinction had occurred. Trilobites habve left behind an extensive fossil record. They were tested for punctuated equilibria. They illustrate the most diverse species of metazoans from the Early Cambrian and thus, they are important in the geological history of reconstruction.
