Question
Last week there was an investigative news item produced by Associated Press (AP) & Reuters - and carried by leading newspapers of the world (The Guardian - U.K.; New York Times - U.S.A; Washington Post - U.S.A.; The Seattle Times - U.S.A.; .... and many more) that the shrimp that we buy from the leading grocery stores in the U.S., which includes WalMart, Costco, Aldi, Albertsons, Dollar General, Whole Foods, Safeway, Sprouts Farmers Market, etc. (U.S.A.), ... and the shrimp that is served at leading restaurant chains in the U.S. including Red Lobster, Olive Garden, etc. - most of the shrimp served/sold are produced by slave labor/human trafficking in Thailand. Would you still eat shrimp after learning about this? This is a question about international trade and I am conducting a survey.
Explanation / Answer
To avoid eating shrimp is challanging. As a human being, I will definitely stop eating shrimp after knowing that it is produced by slave labour/human trafficking. But, as a rational consumer, this will not stop me from consuming shrimp as it satisfies my want and provides utility. Also, there is no other alternative for shrimp, so I will still eat shrimp because I do pay a price for its use.
