Several theories of motivation are described in the book: Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs theory, Frederick Herzberg’s Two-factor theory, Vroom’s Expectancy theory and Equity theory. There are other theories as well; such as, Job Enrichment, Job Sharing, Job Enlargement, Flextime, and Telecommuting.
In your opinion, which one(s) works best in the workplace?
Why do you find it/them appealing?
Explanation / Answer
Maslow's Theory: Hierarchy of needs with more basic needs at the bottom of pyramid and people move towards self actualization
Frederick Herzberg’s Two-factor theory: Certain factors in the workplace cause job satisfaction while some others cause dissatisfaction
Vroom’s Expectancy theory: Its a mental process regarding choice so as to maximise pleasure and minimise pain
Equity theory: It asks for a fair balance between employees inputs (skill etc) and his ouputs (salary etc)
All of the above theories in some way or the other can be related to workplace environment, but the one's that work best are: Equity theory & Frederick Herzberg’s Two-factor theory. Employers do consider the factors highlighted in these two theories i.e in order to retain the employees, specially the best of the lot, focus is on improving the workplace and maintaining the balance for employees as per equity theory.
