The four stages of team performance
Forming- in this first stage the team first meets each other and are introduced to each. They share information like their backgrounds, interests and experience and build first impressions of each other. They learn about working project, discuss the project's objectives and start to discuss about their role.
During this initial stage of team improvement, it is important for the team leader to defines team goals and provide clear direction regarding the project. The team leader should ensure to the members about their roles and responsibilities and should work with the team to help them establish how they will work together
Storming- In this stage, the team members do better and compete with each other for status and for receiving of their ideas. They have different views on what should be done and how it should be done. In this stage they are guided by team leader, they learn to solve problems together,
The team leader needs to be expert at helping the team through this stage - confirming the team members learn to listen to each other and admire their differences and ideas. The team leader will need to coach some team members to be more self-confident and other team members on how to be more real listeners.
The team leader could start transitioning decision making to the team to permit them more independence, but still stay involved to resolve any conflicts as quickly as possible.
Norming
In this stage team members are beginning to work more efficiently as a team. They are focused on developing a way of working together. They admire each other's views and value their differences. The team members trust each other and are now helping each other to work toward a common goal
In this stage, the team leader might be involved in decision making and problem solving because the team members are working better together and can take on more responsibility in these areas.
Performing
In this stage, teams are working at a very high level. They focus only on objective and goals of defined project. If there are needs to be a change in team processes then the team come to agreement on changing procedures on their own without dependence on the team leader.
In this stage, the team leader is not involved in decision making, problem solving or other such activities involving the day-to-day work of the team.
